About

The Ramsuran Lab

An internationally recognised research programme uncovering how human genetic and epigenetic

variation shapes health and disease. Based at the College Of Health Science at UKZN, built for Africa.

who we are

Uncovering the biology behind disease in Africa

The Ramsuran Lab, is led by Prof. Veron Ramsuran, Our lab is dedicated to advancing our understanding of how human genetic and epigenetic variation influences health and disease. Prof. Ramsuran has established an internationally recognised research programme focused on uncovering the molecular mechanisms that drive infectious and complex diseases.

Our research integrates human genetics, genomics, epigenetics, immunology and bioinformatics to investigate how host genetic factors influence susceptibility to disease, disease progression, and treatment outcomes. A major focus of the laboratory is understanding host-pathogen interactions in diseases of significant public health importance, including HIV, tuberculosis, COVID-19, autoimmune disorders, metabolic diseases and cancer. Using cutting-edge technologies — next-generation sequencing, long-read sequencing, genome-wide association studies, transcriptomics, epigenetic profiling and advanced computational analysis — the lab seeks to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets that contribute to precision medicine and improved healthcare outcomes, particularly within African populations.

We are committed to addressing the underrepresentation of African genomic data in global research, building a deeper understanding of genetic diversity across Africa, and training the next generation of scientists in genomics, genetics and translational biomedical research.

Led by

Prof.Veron Ramsuran

Prof. Ramsuran is an Associate Professor at College Of Health Science UKZN, and an Associate Scientist at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA). A Future Leaders African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellow of the Royal Society and African Academy of Sciences, his work on HLA genetics and HIV has been published in Science, PNAS and Clinical Infectious Diseases, and covered by over 100 international media outlets.

Beyond the science, he is know for building research capacity and has mentored over 40 students and early-career scientists. This includes 11 postdoctoral fellows,16 PhD students and 15 Master’s students, supporting their growth as emerging researchers and future leaders in science.

“For me, the lab is a happy place because I genuinely love what I do. Every small success feels incredibly rewarding.”
